The best solution I’ve found is LogMeIn.

LogMeIn is most basically a remote desktop platform.  What sets it apart from older applications such as VNC is that you don’t need to make any changes to your firewall or forward any ports, LogMeIn takes care of it all for you.

Their free version is excellent and does everything most people need in a remote desktop application.

Their paid version is $69.95 per year and gives you added functionality such as drag and drop file access (drag a file from the remote computer onto the local computer or vice versa) and remote printing (your local printers show up and are usable  on the remote computer).  I’ve used the free version as my backup remote access for years and find it to be fantastic.
